Make your own wall art with canvas, handmade papers and glue.

Spring cleaning and total renewal that is...we have been painting...and re-organizing our spaces...and decorating...

It is almost impossible to resist the urge of making things to decorate your home once everything starts looking fresh. Isn't it? Today I want to share with you a few home decor projects I finally finished.

I did a lot of gift styling a few years ago at shows, for shops and have amassed an amazing collection {some given to me by manufacturers...others I purchased} of decorative and wrapping papers. And while organizing my studio {haven't finished yet...shhh!} I re-discovered the great selection I have!

Handmade papers are my most favorite and do have quite a few pieces. They are rustic, some hand painted, strong, textured and vibrant. Love them! I have been thinking for a while about making my own wall art {wanting it to spend NADA and using materials already available in my studio} and these pieces seemed to be the perfect element.

Craft store visits are always such a pleasant experience and especially when I find canvas like the ones above on sale! Purchased a few in different sizes for later use...Canvas, glue and handmade papers were all I needed to put my wall art together. Let me show you how I did it!

MATERIALS:

Canvas in different sizes
Handmade papers {although any other sturdy papers will do}
Aleene's® Crystal Clear Acid Free Tacky Spray™ {use in well ventilated area}.
Craft brush
Fiskars® Scissors
Americana Gloss Enamels from Decoart in: Royal Fuchsia, Black and Bright Orange

INSTRUCTIONS:

TIP: If the papers you will be using on this projects are not sturdy be extra careful to avoid any bubbles and wrinkles when you adhere it to the canvas.

  1. Start by selecting your canvas and also think where you will be hanging your wall art.
  2. Choose and select your "paper art".
  3. With a ruler measure your canvas and handmade papers. You will only cover the top of the canvas with them.
  4. Using your Fiskars® Scissors cut your handmade paper pieces.
  5. Wipe off with your canvases with a cloth.
  6. Aleene's® Crystal Clear Acid Free Tacky Spray™ is the perfect adhesive option for this kind of projects. Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area.
  7. Spray on the canvas at about 6" to 8" inches above the surface in a side to side motion.
  8. Wait about a minute and press your handmade paper on the canvas.
  9. Using a clean cloth wipe and slightly press to make sure there are no bubbles or wrinkles.
  10. Let dry about 30 minutes.
  11. TIP: You can coat your finished wall art with a sealer but it is optional. I didn't because of the beautiful textured surfaces.

  1. Once your new wall art on canvas is dry you can now start finishing them.
  2. Using your craft brush and Americana Gloss Enamels from Decoart paint your wall art borders.
  3. Choose a colour that goes well with the handmade paper print.
  4. Let dry 24 hours.
TIP: You can actually seal your wall art canvas once they are dry.  I did not seal mine because they look like fabric and love their rough texture.
Your wall art canvas is ready to hang and enjoy! This is how our wall art looks at home. We are still playing around with the display. Which display do you like best? The one with the black/grey, pink and orange canvas? Or the one with the black/grey, orange and neutral one?

DISCLOSURE: I have a material connection with Fiskars, Decorart and Ilovetocreate because I received a cash payment, gift, sample or other thing of value or product that are mentioned herein.

I hope you enjoy this post and get creative decorating. Make something for your home!
